What do you want the project to achieve?

This should answer the question that I hope you have asked yourself - Why do you want a website?

In the past often the answer has been – ‘because everybody else has one’.

That is not the right answer any more.

The answer could be creating sales, providing information, entertaining...

A website should be treated as a business investment and the same consideration should be given to this as would be given to an investment in new machinery, new premises or a new computer.     

The objectives will help the designer create ideas about how the site should perform, how it should look and function.
